Boa Kwon (born November 5, 1986 in Guri, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea) is a South Korean singer, commonly known by her stage name BoA. She is an active singer in both South Korea and Japan. Her Korean record label, SM Entertainment, has positioned her to become a cross-cultural idol in East Asia and parts of Southeast Asia. She has released a total of ten full-length albums, three mini-albums, two compilation albums, two remix albums, and over thirty singles in total in both Japan and South Korea. Sold in many parts of Asia, BoA's records have passed ten-million copies. BoA is fluent in her native tongue Korean, Japanese, and speaks conversational English. She is currently learning Mandarin Chinese. BoA has re-recorded several of her songs in Mandarin Chinese and has written the lyrics for several of her Korean and Japanese songs. She has also translated some of her songs from Japanese to Korean and vice-versa and then re-recorded them again. BoA is one of the most commercially successful artists in both South Korea and Japan and is one of the leading stars of the "Korean wave" or "Hallyu". BoA has re-signed an extended contract with SM Entertainment until 2012 for which she will receive 100,000 shares of SM South Korean female vocalist BoA, who made her Japanese debut in May 2001 with the single "ID; Peace, is unusual in that she's a star both in her home country and in Japan. BoA was born on Nov. 5, 1986, and was signed to South Korean record label SM Entertainment in her early teens. She came to the attention of Avex, Japan's biggest independent label, after scoring a top-10 album in South Korea with her debut set, ID: Peace B, and in 2001 signed a recording deal with Avex. Her success as a chart-topping J-pop artist can be seen as part of the overall "Korea boom" in Japan that was triggered by Japan and South Korea co-hosting the 2002 soccer World Cup tournament. Unlike many Japanese-Korean celebrities, who hide their ethnic origins for fear of discrimination, BoA has been billed as Korean from day one. "BoA," by the way, is a stage name - which stands for "Beat of the Angel" - based on her real name, Kwon Boa. BoA's 2002 album, Listen to My Heart, hit No. 1 on the Oricon album chart, making BoA is the first artist from Asia ever to have a No. 1 album in Japan, according to Japanese music industry magazine Oricon. Her music lies somewhere between Avex's trademark dance-pop (for example, Ayumi Hamasaki) and the more American R&B-influenced type of music that's proved so successful for Hikaru Utada. BoA has become a "tarento" (talent) in the classic J-pop mold, with endless media appearances and scads of product endorsements. BoA is 18, turning 19, by conventional American standards. However, rather than the standard aging system that we all are familiar with, Koreans use a system unique to their country. While we count how many years we have lived, Koreans count the number of years we have been alive. Therefore, the year in which you are born is your first year, the next is your second year, and so on. Once you are born, you are automatically considered a year old. Birthdays are still celebrated in Korea, however, you are not considered any older. Koreans are the same age throughout the year, and are officially a year older when the new year comes around. For example, if you were to be born in December, you would be considered two years old once the new year arrives. Thus, everyone born in the same year as you is the same age as you. If you wish to figure out your Korean age, simply add a year to your age if you have had your birthday this year, or add two years if you have not. She's 20 in Korea and will turn 21 once the new year comes. In the US, shell be turning 19 this coming birthday
The Kwon brothers have come together to help each other out. Kwon Soon Wook directed the music video for his older brother, Kwon Soon Hwon's title song 'La primo' off his new classical album 'Easy Classic'. Kwon Soon Hwon had previously released 3 digital albums which gained enough popularity to top the rankings in the classical music category.
Kwon Soon Wook has graduated from Seoul National University's Graduate School of Music and as of late is preparing to enter London's Royal Academy of Music, one of the world's leading music institutions. In addition to Kwon Soon Wook's music video directing activities, he is also an entrepreneur, working with the jewelry brand Ramee. He is also responsible for launching the accessories brand BB Simon in Korea. What a busy guy!
Nice to know where BoA gets her musical and artsy traits in the family. Oh, and if you haven't figured it out by now, these two talented gentlemen are BoA's older brothers.
BoA Voted As One Of The Best Female Power Leaders
A poll was held asking 250 opinion leaders who they thought were the Best 30 Female Power Leaders in Korea's society. Politician Park Geun Hye grabbed the top spot with 244 votes, while BoA was the only singer that made it onto the list. BoA was ranked 26th on the list in a three way tie with Shim Jae Myung (MK Pictures President and CEO) and Kang Soo Jin (ballet dancer). In the broadcasting and entertainment section she was tied in 3rd with Shim Jae Myung with 116 votes.
'The Face' #1 on Oricon Weekly Charts; BoA Makes History
Today BoA has officially scored yet another number one album; her 6th regular Japanese album "The Face" has topped the Oricon Weekly Album Charts. Of course, this should come as no surprise to those who have been following the Oricon Daily Album Charts, which "The Face" has been topping ever since its release.
This makes BoA one of only two artists in the J-pop history to top the Oricon Weekly Album Charts 6 consecutive times. The other artist with such an honor is Ayumi Hamasaki, who currently has 8 consecutive number one albums under her belt.
Those living outside Japan can purchase "The Face" online, which is available in 3 different versions: CD, CD+DVD and CD+2DVD Limited Edition, containing 7 brand new tracks as well as various PVs and live performances.
BoA's New Jewelry Line & Other News
With the help of her brother, Kwon Soon Wook, BoA will be releasing a special edition jewelry line through Ramee called 'Ramee by BoA.' On April 1st, the 20 accessories that BoA helped design will be on sale at the Lotte Young Plaza located in MyungDong, Seoul. The accessories worn during the 'My Name', 'Girls On Top', and 'Anyband' era will also be included (primarily the accessories created from silver).
Since this is BoA's first project as an entrepreneur, she has the entertainment industry buzzing with anticipation. Apart from designing the products, BoA is also greatly involved with the overall management of the company. Lotte Department store said that they are planning on releasing the line in all of their stores nationwide.
BoA's brother, Kwon Soon Wook said, "BoA always says that she wants to study design at art school. She has such high interest in fashion to the point where she checks to see what brands sell better in Melrose (L.A.) and Japan; or why luxury brand Dior sells better in Japan than France. Through this project she put on her first button from transforming into a fashion entrepreneur."
BoA's popular Hite poster
Ever since BoA became the new model for Hite, the demand for Hite posters have skyrocketed. There have been many cases where people have been secretly sneaking off with the posters from convenience stores, as well as numerous requests for BoA's Hite poster. Since then, Hite has been giving out a special poster with BoA's signature on it. But the icing on the cake is, the poster is made out of fabric so you can stick it up on a wall with ease.
Aside from releasing a hot new dance track in December, BoA is teaming up with one of Japan's up and coming Rap acts, SEAMO.
SEAMO originally debuted years ago under the moniker "SEAMONATOR," a play on his love for dirty jokes (Shimoneta) and the Terminator.
SEAMO caught his first break after dropping the "NATOR" from his name and collaborating with hot R&B experimental duo, Bennie K with their hit song "A Love Story."
After working together with Korean super-group, The Grace (Tenjochiki in Japan), SEAMO finally ascended to the upper echelon of the Japanese music industry by releasing his hit song "Mata Aimashou" (We'll see each other again). Mata Aimashou was a departure from SEAMO's funk filled Rap and showed listeners and onlookers his diversity.
BoA and SEAMO will team up on SEAMO's 3rd album, "Round About." Their track, "Hey Boy, Hey Girl," will be featured as the 4th track on the new album. In order to promote his new album, BoA and SEAMO will be performing the song together on Friday's Music Station.
SEAMO's 3rd album, Round About, drops on the 31st of October.
BoA's new single, currently untitled, will also feature her song, Smile Again, as a B-Side and will release on 12 December, the day following her Boa the LIVE "X'Mas" show.
Be sure to pick up these new CDs and catch their performance this Friday on Music Station!
